Bob’s Inspiring Story With COTA WA in Embracing Community, Health and Learning
A lifelong learner, world traveller, and passionate advocate for healthy aging

The Council on the Ageing (COTA) WA feel privileged to have had the opportunity to interview Bob about his incredible experiences and insights with the organisation. Bob, a dedicated member of COTA WA, shares his incredible journey and the importance of lifelong learning, socialising, and maintaining physical health.
Born on a beautiful campus, Bob has spent his entire life immersed in academia. With two doctorate degrees in Embryology and Children’s Learning Theory, his career has taken him across the globe, working for the United Nations, assisting with curriculum development worldwide, and training science teachers through the National Science Foundation. Despite his impressive achievements, Bob believes that staying active and socially connected is key to leading a fulfilling life.
Having been with us for over 21 years, Bob is an active participant in COTA WA’s Strength for Life (SFL) program, which promotes physical health and community engagement. “Our bodies are fascinating in how they work. We can either take care of them or destroy them,” Bob says. “It’s important to exercise and build muscle because our heart works harder due to gravity. Strong muscles help relieve some of that tension, and training through programs like Strength For Life (SFL) helps improve overall health while allowing older people to socialise.”
Bob encourages older people to take an active role in their well-being. His advice? Socialise, keep learning to fight dementia, and keep moving. “Building basic body muscles is crucial. I also recommend activities that involve learning, such as puzzles, reading, or even something as simple as observing nature and birds,” Bob adds.
When asked about the key to happiness, Bob emphasises the importance of a happy marriage and a positive mindset. He has found a strong sense of belonging with COTA WA, which he values as an organisation that gives older people a voice, strengthens connections, and acts as a bridge between seniors and the government.
COTA WA is committed to ensuring that older people in Western Australia remain active, engaged, and heard. If you’re looking for a place to connect, learn, and improve your health, consider joining COTA WA today.
