COTA WA is proud to announce the appointment of Dr Carmen Lawrence AO as the new Chair of the COTA WA Board.

Dr Carmen Lawrence

Dr Lawrence is a trailblazing former Premier of Western Australia (1990-1993) and the first female Premier of an Australian state. Named an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2022, Dr Lawrence is renowned for championing social justice, health, and education reforms.

After serving as Western Australia Premier, Dr Lawrence served in federal politics from 1994 to 2007, including as a Minister in the Keating Government.

In accepting the appointment, Dr Lawrence emphasised the importance of not forgetting our older Western Australians. “Our older citizens have significantly contributed to the fabric of our society. They deserve to be advocated for vigorously, ensuring they receive the respect, services, and support they need. At the same time, it’s vital to recognise and celebrate the immense value they continue to offer to our community.”

The Hon Christopher Pyne, COTA Australia Chair, welcomed Dr Lawrence’s appointment, stating, “We are thrilled to have Carmen Lawrence join us as Chair of COTA WA. She is a passionate advocate for equity and has consistently demonstrated her commitment to public service. We are confident that with her leadership in the West and COTA Australia’s federal advocacy older West Australians will be well represented through strong and effective advocacy on the things that matter to them.”

COTA WA is the voice of older West Australians and Dr Lawrence’s leadership will strengthen our efforts to address the challenges faced by older people in WA and enhance their quality of life.
